Why is market access only part of the problem?

The Balancing Mechanism prices changes to generation or demand from assets already available to the system. Smaller and aggregated sites have routes into that market, but access alone does not provide constraint forecasts or bid recommendations. Bid Copilot is being built to support those decisions alongside existing route-to-market arrangements.

What does “plant you already have” mean?

The Balancing Mechanism buys changes to an operating plan. An offer is a price to increase generation or reduce demand; a bid is a price to reduce generation or increase demand. For constrained wind farms, accepted bids decide what they earn, or give up, when they reduce output.

The headline describes that operational market. It does not mean small sites are barred, or that every small site is unable to compete. Smaller and embedded generators can participate through a supplier or offtaker, through a Virtual Lead Party grouping sites into secondary units, or under their own agreement with NESO.Source 1

Why is a route to market not enough?

Pricing bids well means predicting when your boundary will be constrained, how much output NESO is likely to need to remove, and what other units are likely to bid. Contracts, availability and lost subsidy income also affect what a price means for the site.

Aggregation provides a participation route. It does not remove the need to make those decisions. Independent owners without an in-house trading desk still need a way to assess their options and review the bids submitted on their behalf.

How will Bid Copilot help?

Nodal Shift Bid Copilot is in development. It will combine public Balancing Mechanism records from Elexon's Insights SolutionSource 2 and network and market data from the NESO Data PortalSource 3 with weather forecasts and a site's metering, availability and contract details.

It is designed to forecast constraint risk, recommend bid and offer prices, and explain the reasoning and revenue at stake. In advisor mode, your team or route-to-market provider decides and submits. Planned autopilot mode will submit within limits you set, with the right market access in place.

Bid Copilot is designed to work alongside existing power purchase agreements and route-to-market arrangements. It will support decisions; it does not replace registration, market agreements or an asset's physical capabilities. No revenue uplift is guaranteed.
